FOLATE vs Folic Acid-Which one should you choose?⠀
Although folate occurs naturally in some foods, and folic acid is used synthetically to fortify others, approximately 60-70% percent of the population in the United States have genetic variations that make them unable to utilize folate appropriately. ⠀
These genetic variation occur in people who have one or two copies of the MTHFR gene. Having this gene does not allow the MTHFR enzyme to function properly, so methylation of folate does not occur optimally. ⠀
⠀
If you are not able to reduce folate into it's active form, folate cannot be used by the body, resulting in negative health side effects and the possible inability to maintain a healthy mood.⠀
⠀
For people with MTHFR gene variations, supplementing with the already activated form of folate is far more effective in providing this form of folate than introducing the pre-converted form to the body through typical folic acid supplements.⠀
So when you are looking for supplements to take, look for the L-Methylfolate (5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid) and B12 in methylcobalamin, to provide the active form of folate so the body can utilize this this very important vitamin better.⠀
⠀
Unfortunately most cheaper retail supplement brands will not have this form of active folate in their product, they will have folic acid. To top it off, some research suggests that folic acid on it's own can interfere with folate metabolism by blocking the receptor in people who have the MTHFR gene.⠀
⠀
In summary most people are going to need FOLATE OVER Folic Acid. Look for this in your supplements! Also be sure to eat a well balanced diet that includes lots of color, diversity, and fiber. Luckily natural foods like green leafy vegetables, liver, egg, etc doesn't need synthetic folic acid, because they are already a great source of natural folate!⠀
